proudly out of place

Long before California planted its first vines, Franciscan missionaries were tending grapes in the high desert of New Mexico. The first wine grapes in what is now the United States took root here in the early 1600s. Four centuries later, Out Of Place Winery exists to carry that tradition forward.

We took our name because almost everything about us seems like it shouldn't be there. Grapevines pushing up through sandy desert soil seems out of place compared to the lush hillsides of Sonoma or Bordeaux. Our winery sits in an industrial park in the middle of the city, not at the end of a dirt road surrounded by rows of grapes. And we don't farm any of our own fruit — we partner with growers from across the state of New Mexico, choosing varietals that best showcase the specific place in which they are grown: the valleys, elevations, and microclimates that make this state's diverse terroir unlike anywhere else.

That patchwork of place is the whole idea. On the viticultural quilt of New Mexico, each square is a vineyard shaped by soil, sun, and altitude you won't find anywhere else — land that yields wines as enchanting and unexpected as the state they come from. We think that's worth bottling.
